JUMP TO LIGHTSPEED!!!!!!!!!!

The basics of space travel in Star Wars require huge amounts of handwaving for it to work. This will haver real science considerations but I'll warn you, this will fall on the soft sci-fi spectrum of things.

First, jumping to light speed is not enough to travel around the galaxy. Just for comparison, the closest star system to ours is 4.37 light-years away. Even if we don't know the distance between planets in the movies, it would be odd to have a galaxy with a cluster of extremely close star systems.

But assuming that you can jump to light speed, ignoring any relativistic side-effects for now, it can be extremely useful. Travel between planets in the same star system would take minutes and it would make Poe Dameron's "lightskipping" make sense in Rise of Skywalker.

Whatever is the tracking system that they use to track each other (radar, sight, whatever), the signal of the sensor picks up travels at light speed at max. So short bursts of light speed would be like disappearing from the enemy sensors for a brief moment, even if the ship is compromised with some sort of tracking device. Weather if this a sensible use of energy or to dangerous to try, it's another thing entirely.

But how about interstellar travel? In some cases it would still be feasible using light speed but it would be fringe cases. What about warp travel, wormholes, that sort of stuff? It would be odd to have two kinds of super speed drives each ship. But, what if wormholes are a natural occurrence in this universe? People would be unable to generate them, but could use them. That would solve a lot of problems.

You see, as advanced the technology of star wars is, society os oddly medieval-like. Having only specific gateways to go (that could be controlled by governments, guilds and such) would answer why information and culture could be so segregated. It would also explain how the Sith could hide planets like Exegol, they would find a particularly hard to find wormhole and keep the information to themselves.

But now, here's the elephant in the room: the, ugh, Holdo maneuver. If you can do that there's no reason you wouldn't develop light speed missiles, period. I don't care if it's one in a million, fire a million missiles. You guys can retrofit entire planets into a weapon, this is easy. So the Holdo maneuver should stay just that, a last-ditch desperate suicide maneuver.

The only solution to this problem is that a light speed drive should only be available to larger ships and require a lot of energy. Energy that could be better used in other ways. The Millennium Falcon would be on the lower end of the ships that would be capable of such a thing, and it could be the reason that it's breaking down a lot. It just don't have the infrastructure to handle it properly. So ships like Luke's X-Wing wouldn't be able to do the jump, but might be able to jump through wormholes. Secret or hard to navigate wormholes might be how planets like Ahc-to and Dagoba stay hard to reach also. But maybe it would be wise to over-use this.

This would also make the hyperspace concept (i.e. the Kessel Run) make more sense. Pre-established routes that are then mapped by civilizations to use. Depending of the amount of those nodes and their respective orbits, navigating between them might be a real challenge.
