The Embodiement of the Rule Of Cool: Lightsabers
So, lightsabers. They're a problem. They're cool, but we are used to them, but they're a staple of the franchise, but they make no sense. What to do?
First and foremost. I'll just assume that the technology to restrain energy/plasma/whatever and keeps the user safe from the heat generated by the thing exists. So also not only force fields but also thermal barriers are a technology that should be taken into account in the series. It could make sense to create a factory inside an active volcano, for instance.
The concept of lightsaber it's not so odd, if you think that Jedi go across the galaxy and would want to be able to cut through just about anything, including super-hard materials that they have never encountered. But why not lightspears, lightshields, morphing weapons, etc? The answer is two-fold.
The first aspect is cultural. In the first and last trilogy, active force-users are very rare so there's not a booming lightsaber industry. In the prequels, the Jedi Order is in decadence. And one of the aspects of this decadence could be being too rigid. So they think that there's only one "proper" way to build a lightsaber and don't try to invent.
The second aspect is technical and should be worked into the movies. I think that some clever variation should be inserted in every movie, to address this issue. Specially if each Jedi or Sith crafts his own lightsaber. Darth Tyranus could have crafted a lightsaber that doubles as a blaster, for instance. Since it's grip allows for such use. Rey should've crafted a lightspear to take avantage of her fighting style.
But why only Jedi use lightsabers? They're dangerous to use and only jedi-like reflexes can make any good use for them. And it would be smart that a lightsaber would have it's on-off switch inside of it, so only a Force user would be able to activate it. A lightsaber with a button on the outside would be a clue that a non Force user would've tinkered with it.
I'm also playing with the idea that the Knights of Ren would be Sith fanboys, that wouldn't be Force-users (except Kylo, of course), but found out how to manufacture artificial kyber cristals. So they would figure out different ways to use kyber cristals in their weapons. This should be enough to account for the overall lightsaber question.
